When I was 18, I was wary of everybody over 25, let alone people who already had a decent job at that age. As soon as I turned 25 myself, I was forced to revise the age boundary upwards. This gave me a breathing spell until 40. I imagined my 40-year-old self in a stable relationship and in a flat of passable size and condition: wishes my 25 year-old self considered simply unattainable. At the age of 40, I had to find yet another acceptable milestone. Old age, so I reasoned, definitely did not begin before 50. With the first reading glasses, a light gastritis caused by stress, and holidays spent in hotels without child care facilities.
I got my first reading glasses at the age of 45, my stomach is in perfect condition, and I still prefer holiday apartments to hotels. Being 50 is completely different from what I imagined it to be – it is far better, as was obvious to Oscar Wilde:
The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.
Those of you who envy me, rest assured that one day it will be your turn: wrinkles are democrats, as Lord Byron says, they come to everybody.
It is true, seen through the eyes of an 18-year-old: I am old, and I am thankful for it. The reason is that the years have given me all the dear people who are here to celebrate my 50th birthday with me.
