Just the other day, a character called David Brent said something that made me wonder. He quipped, "If at first you don't succeed, remove all evidence you ever tried." I'd heard this quote before, but I've never really given it much thought.
Until now. I suddenly realized that I would never ever heed that kind of advice, and I would never expect you to, either. The past six months have been rough, and our attempts to quickly put the company's worries behind us have failed. So we really cannot say that we succeeded at first.
But what, ladies and gentlemen, does that mean for us? David Brent would probably tell us to simply pretend that we haven't tried anything so far, so that the eventual success, which I do not doubt for a second, will look as if it occurred at the first attempt.
I do not agree. We learn from our mistakes. I am not even sure whether we should call our failed attempts "mistakes" at all, only because they did not yield the desired results. They were valid, legitimate attempts, and the results were that we found out what worked, and what didn't. By removing the evidence that we tried, we would also remove our chances to review that evidence, and to learn from it.
David Brent sees evidence of unsuccessful attempts as proof of weakness. I see that evidence as an incentive to keep trying. To err is human, and we all are human. And if there is one thing I know about humans, it is that they are persistent. They do not give up ...
